A few weeks!

I'm so sorry, i've been terrible at keeping up to date recently! We've had a few meetings since I last wrote, so here is a quick overview of our programme and experiences since coming back from Easter!

We are doing the World Traveller and World Issues badges over this half term so we're 'visiting' a different country each week.

16th April

This week was an 'introductory' evening into the badges. Here we covered the sections about going on a trip. We started the evening by making our own passports and including the type of information that would be needed and we talked about the different stamps you may get.

We then split the girls into smaller groups and they were all given one of three different types of holiday (Hot, Cold, Rainy) and they had to plan and make an outfit for the trip... The difference? All they had were different coloured bin bags! This activity went really well, the girls really thought about their holiday and how they might need shorts/coats/umbrellas and also about what they would take in their suitcase with them. The activity encouraged them to really work together in smaller groups (We worked the groups so there was a range of ages and Guiding experiences in each one!) After planning and making their outfits, they 'presented' them to the rest of the Brownies and Leaders.

We like to run this activity, as it kinda runs itself. We gave the girls over half an hour to make it, and they would have happily continued doing this for longer!

We finished the evening with some games!

23rd April

This was a bit of an unusual evening, but it was something I had wanted to do with Brownies for quite a while - although it was a bit of a shame that we had four girls away on a school residential!

This evening we went to South America, and had a Zumba session! I made contact with a Zumba instructor via Facebook (Who also used to be one of my school teachers!) and asked her if she would come along.

All the girls and all the leaders (Apart from Ginger Owl who is rather pregnant) took part in the session! We did 6 or 7 different routines, of varying difficulties with lots of drinks stops in-between the routines!

I was really proud of all the Brownies for getting involved and no-one asked to sit out (Like they sometimes do when we're doing other activities) and they all put lots and lots of energy into it! They were great advocates for the unit to someone from outside of the Unit and it's definitely something I would do again... But maybe not when it's as hot outside!

30th April

Tonight we went to Italy! When we asked the girls for their ideas on what they would like to cook at Brownies, a lot of them said Pizza!

We split the girls between two tables and first of all they had to cut all of their ingredients and grate cheese etc. The food we provided them with were;

  • Cheese
  • Mozerella
  • Peppers
  • Chorizo
  • Pepperoni
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Tomatos

We had lots of leaders on hand to supervise the chopping, but for some girls it was the first time they had ever been allowed to chop food like this. After all the food had been prepared, girls were given pitta breads and tomato pure to build their pizzas and when finished, we wrapped them up to send them home! (We made the decision to send them home uncooked as we have limited grill/oven space and it would take a long time to cook 20!)

The Brownies were really giggly and a little bit silly tonight so this activity took much longer than I had expected, and I had other games and activities planned (At least they can be used another evening!)

A Brownie Leader's Life

So here I am, once again I have decided i'm going to write a blog about Brownies - specifically the 21st Wakefield Brownies and the activities and trips we take part in. We're a group of 22 Brownies and 5 Leaders based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and we have a very full and varied programme which the girls enjoy! I've been involved in running the unit for 10 years, starting as a Young Leader and I took over as Guider in Charge in September 2017. My aim is to blog, once a week about that week's meeting. I want to share resources that we have used and share our successes (And how we would do it differently next time!)

5th March

Last night we had an evening based on being blind. We talked in the first instance about how you read when you’re blind (the girls knew that you read a series of dots, but didn’t know it was called Braille) and then did a few activities. Firstly we wrote our names in Braille using small felt dots and the alphabet. This was really effective as the girls were able to feel their names. At the same time, girls were taken into the kitchen in small groups to ‘feel’ items and try to work out what they are - but without seeing. This bit was left up to Tawny Owl to organise, so I’m not too sure what was in them all... but I know one included custard! From the giggles I heard, I think that was an enjoyable part of the evening! Then, when some girls had finished, we used baking trays and balls to write words in Braille (thank you Pinterest for that stroke of genius!) the girls wrote their names, the name of their sizes, the word Brownies and then wrote out words for others to guess what

4th March - Magna!

We took the Brownies to Magna, the Science Museum in Rotherham on Sunday 4th. We had booked as part of their uniformed organisations scheme so had 3 workshops booked as well as time to go around the museum.  Only Ginger Owl had been to Magna before- and she had suggested the trip. After a safety briefing from the Magna team, the first session was about Alien Slime. The girls all made their own little pot of slime, in various colours and they were bagged up and given out at the end of the day.  The second session was about volcanoes- they made volcanoes and then after each ‘eruption’ they added another layer of play dough to make the mountain bigger and see how the lava spread. They also had a go at identifying rocks. This was really good and all the girls learnt something in this session!  The final session was about ‘big bubbles’ and they were all able to stand inside a bubble, as well as blowing their own. This was very cool, but unfortunately I can’t share the photos! The rest of th
